 MISSED A POST?
Day 1: Bath Bombs
Day 2: Face Masks
Day 3: Body Scrub
Day 4: Hair Mask

Thanks for joining us this week.
Hopefully you've learned a little more about your skin, what's good for it and how you can get it!

TODAY: LIP BALM!
What is it about women and lip balm?  I can't even count how many I have.  At least one for every purse I carry,  one I keep at my desk, one in my dance bag.....and others that are MIA!  And some people seem addicted to their lip balm.  The reason for that is that some poorly made lip balms contain ingredients that actually pull moisture out of your lips, thus making your lips feel drier causing you to reapply said lip balm!  It's a vicious cycle!

Today I'm reviewing Kiehl's Lip Balm #1

This is a clear lip balm with a low SPF that is nourishing and protective. It's unscented and unflavoured, so it's great for men too! The tube is also very unassuming, so no guy would mind carrying this around!
This lip balm contains  Octinoxate which is the active sunscreen agent.   It absorbs UV-B and UV-A rays from the sun, protecting the skin from damage. It is also used to reduce the appearance of scars.

Lanolin is used in this lip balm as well.  Lanolin is literally wool grease from sheep; it's a yellow waxy substance secreted by the sebaceous glandsLanolin's role is to protect the skin against the ravages of climate and the environment!

Additionally Kiehl's included wheat germ oil (high in Vitamin E  for keeping free radicals at bay, and keeping our lips looking young and plump!)  Finally there's aloe vera which helps soothe irritated and raw skin and has antibacterial and anti fungal properties!

I used this lip balm at the Olympics last year when I was out and about at outdoor events like the Men's Ski Jumping!  I might have been freezing, but my lips were saved!
Kiehl's also offers this amazing lip balm in other flavours
Vanilla, Coconut, Pear, Cranberry, Mint, & Mango.
Make sure to hop on over to Jill's Blog
and learn how to make your very own lip balm!
It's sure to be a sweet treat!

Don't forget to stop by tomorrow...we're doing our LUSH-ous give away for a $50 giftcard!

Today: Hair Masks
I'm a sucker for hair products!  I have long, thick, coarse, wavy hair that has a mind of it's own, and I've been fighting with it desperately to get it to do what I want.  My hair never feels soft (to me) and always seems to look dull.  Oh I forgot to mention that in my desire to have 'good hair' I blow dry and flat iron about 5 days a week.....give or take.  So on top of being thick, coarse and wavy, it's dry and frizzy.  Today I have a rememdy for dried out winter hair!

BEFORE!
The lack of humidity in the air during winter means we fight with static everywhere-including our hair.  Here is my recipe for Leslie's B.O.V.A (Banana, Olive Oil, Vinegar,
Avocado) Repairing Hair Mask!

What You'll Need
1 Ripe Avocado
1 Ripe Banana
2 (ish) Tbls Olive Oil
2 (ish) Tbls Balsamic Vinegar

I know, looking at these ingredients all
together kinda makes you want to gag!
But here's why you should include all of them....

AVOCADO: So, by now we've learnt about the incredible properites of Avocado-if not go check out my face mask post and my post about Vitamins and free radicals.  Avocado does similar things for your hair as it does for your skin-nourishing it, making it shiney, healthy and strong.  Good ole Omega 3's!

BANANA: This fruit rich in potassium, natural oils, carbs and vitamins helps soften and protect hair's natural elasticity-woo hoo!  Bananas can also help control dandruff!
The Vitamin B helps prevent split ends!

BALSAMIC VINEGAR:  This is the rinsing agent.  You'll see ALOT of DIY hair masks that include vingear, balsamic vinegar or apple cider.  These acidic ingredients add TONNES of shine to the hair!  For extra shine add a few drops of Rosemary oil!

OLIVE OIL: My favourite piece of info about EVOO is that it makes hair 3 times stronger!  So if you have fine hair that tends to break, you wear it in a ponytail or other styles that can rip and break hair, you should definietly be using a hair product with olive oil to protect and prevent breakage!

So you might have noticed that I didn't include egg in my hair mask?  Eggs are great for adding protein and stregnth to your hair for sure!  But, as Jill discovered, using egg in your at-home mask can be a bit tricky.....particularly when you're rinsing it out....if you like to have a hot shower, you might end up with scrambled eggs in your hair.  Just a warning!

Creating the mask is simple!

Step 1). Slice and mash your banana.
Make sure your banana is quite ripe-it will make this stage easier

Step 2). Cube your avocado and mash with the banana.
Your mask could be quite chunky....as mine was.

Step 3). Stir in olive oil and blend well.

Step 4). Stir in Balsamic vinegar
creating the lovely puke colour you see!

*note* my mask was quite lumpy, and while I didn't mind that, you might want to throw this mixture into a blender or food processor to eliminate lumps.  It will make it easier to rinse out!

Apply to hair.  Don't be stingy, I used the whole mix!  You want to saturate your hair, so go for it!  I always wrap my hair in a plastic bag when I've got a mask in.  It locks in the humidity and keeps the mask warm, allowing it to penetrate into your hair better!  It also allows you to do household chores or sleep without getting goop everywhere!  I wore the mask for about 30 minutes.

Shower and rinse out well!  Shampoo and condition as normal.  Don't use a clarifying shampoo, as it will strip away the natural moisture you've put into your hair!  Rinse well....I still found bits of banana (ew) in my hair when I blow dried, so you might want to run it through a blender :)

AFTER!
My hair felt soft (!), nourished, and healthy!  Best of all no strong lingering smell!  If anything I smelt banana more than anything after drying it.  Even while I was rinsing it in the shower, I could feel the difference!  And hey, if it works on my hair, I know it will on yours too!

Make sure to hop on over to Jill's Blog and see her review on LUSH's H'Suan Wen Hua, the real version of what I made today!  It truly is a miracle worker!

Tomorrow I'll be reveiwing my favourite lip balm!
It's not flashy but it'll save
those lips for Valentine's Day!

Don't forget we've got a LUSH GiftCard with your name on it coming up in our giveaway this Saturday! Make sure to stay tuned! Your skin will thank you!

Day 2: Face Mask

Today: BODY SCRUB
Body scrubs are one of my favourite shower goodies!  I like how they feel, smell and how they make my skin feel!  There is a story that scrubs originated in tropical locales, like Brazil, where women would scrub their skin with the white sand from the beaches to create silky smooth skin.  Luckily there are many alternatives when it comes to what type of scrub we want.

Sand- Sand is quite abrasive, and therefore should be used in small amounts and used on skin that is naturally thicker and tougher than other skin.  Sand can work wonders on derrieres, thighs and feet! Sand will stay scrubby, regardless of how long its in water.

Almond, Walnut Shell- Nut shells are incredibly abrasive and should probably never be used on facial skin-even though MANY skincare companies use nut shells in facial products!.  The shell of the nut will not break down in water, so the longer you scrub the more damage you can do.  Like sand, they are great on naturally tough skin like bootays, thighs and feet!  So save that scrub for tougher jobs.

Almond Nut/fruit- This is the actual nut that you eat.  It's considerably softer than the shell, and while it doesn't break down in water it is not nearly as abrasive as the outer shell.  I use a great daily facial scrub from LUSH that has ground almonds in it and I swear by it!!!! FYI it's called Angels on Bareskin.

Salt- Do not be afraid of salt scrubs! Yes, salt CAN dry out your skin, but most scrubs have a copious amount of oil (the oil helps keep the scrub together) and that will balance out the drying properties of the salt.  Salt also dissolves in warm water, so it's a safer scrub for people with sensitive skin.  Salt also makes you feel squeaky clean and is a natural skin lightener giving you radiant looking skin!

Sugar- Similar to salt, but often not as abrasive nor as drying.  Sugar will dissolve in warm water and is therefore a gentle alternative for those with more sensitive skin.  Not to mention, it smells great!

DISCLAIMER: products that say 'natural' or 'organic' are not necessarily 100%. Those words often refer to an ingredient in the product that can be classified as organic or natural :)

OK with that out of the way, today I'm reviewing Tree Hut Shea Sugar Body Scrub in Coconut Lime! I love this brand because their scrubs are great and super inexpensive (i buy it at Wal-Mart) with not alot of junky additives that are bad for you.  The smell is absolutely divine, very  tropical and refreshing!

This scrub contains:
Organic Shea Butter: This is a great natural moisturizer because it is similar to the oil that our skin naturally produces!  Shea butter protects the skin from both environmental and free-radical damage. It contains vitamins A and E, and has demonstrated both antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.  Vitamin A & E are faboosh at preventing free radicals, keeping you wrinkle free and looking young!

Lime Extract & Orange Oil:-Citrus oils are natural skin brighteners, leaving you with radiant, glowing skin!  They are also great for eliminating excess oil on the surface of the skin! Scrubs with citrus oils are great for eliminating overly orange self tanner from knees, ankles, elbows etc etc!

Evening Primrose Oil: rejuvenating and anti-aging agent.  Can help calm acne and eczema, making it great on sensitive and/or mature skin.

I use this scrub on any area of my bod I'm about to blade shave (legs and underarms).  Scrubs slough away dead skin cells, which allow for a closer shave with  less chance of razor burn and ingrown hairs.

I really love using scrubs on my arm pits-weird I know, but the pits are often neglected and can become discoloured from antiperspirants, sweat, clothing dye etc.  They are also BIG TIME sweat producers, so keeping them soft, smooth and dead skin free can really help you keep your cool!  I've also used it on my face in a pinch....just make sure to add some water before applying to skin.

Make sure to hop on over to Jill's Blog and learn how to make an equally delicious body scrub!
It's easier than you think-and super cheap!

Make sure to stop by tomorrow...
I'll be creating an all natural hair mask
to save tired, winter weary tresses!

Don't forget we've got a great spa inspired giveaway at the end of the week, so make sure to stay tuned!
Your skin will thank you!

Sisterly Spa Series: Day 2 Face Mask

If you missed yesterday's post, I'm Leslie, sister to the lovely Jill from Envirocraftiness. This week sharing some home made spa recipes, reviews of store bought products and a little skin care help. Every day we'll be posting a review for a store bought spa product on one blog, and a DIY version on her blog!
Make sure to check out both blogs each day!

Today: FACE MASKS!
Mmmm, a good face mask just makes your day doesn't it?  The great thing is an effective face mask is just at your fingertips with items you may already have in your kitchen!  And it'll be just as good as those fancy store bought ones....probably even more so!

Today I am making a knock off LUSH Mask,
which has been discontinued :(
Leslie's Crash Course in Homemade Skin Care

What You'll Need
1/2 ripe avocado
1Tbls Plain Natural Yogurt
1 tsp lemon juice
1 tsp glycerin
5 drops lavender oil
Optional-baking soda, talc or kaolin

Step 1). Gather Ingredients

Step 2). Cut avocado in half, and peel.
Cube and mash in a bowl
Avocado provides a rich source of Vitamin A, B, D E as well as potassium.  Skincare made with avocados will penetrate the skin evenly and quickly making skin moisturized and soft.  Avocados is great on mature, sensitive skin or sufferers of eczema.
For more info about why vitamins are good for your skin, check out my post on Free Radicals.

Step 3). Add yogurt, lemon juice and glycerin
Yoghurt's natural pro biotic properties work like a mini microdermabrasion-meaning they slough off dead skin cells leaving your skin bright, glowing, rejuvenated and fresh!  It's also great in easing redness (sunburns) and eliminating excess sebum (skin oil) on breakouts.  Yogurt also penetrates skin to add elasticity to your skin, keeping wrinkles at bay!  And the lactic acid will gently tighten your skin!
Lemon juice is a natural antibacterial as well as a skin brightener.  It can make sensitive sink tingle, so feel free to leave it out if you're especially sensitive...but keep in mind the difference between a good tingle and a painful burning
Glycerin acts as a natural humectant, meaning it holds moisture.  Glycerin keeps the product and your skin moist as well as bringing moisture to your skin!
It leaves your skin feeling exceptionally soft!

Step 4). Add Lavender Essential oil
Lavender oil is the miracle oil!  I could go on and on about how much I love lavender.  Naturally lavender has relaxing properties, making a great bedside oil to help you relax and sleep.  Best of all lavender oil is AMAZING for all skin types!  Many products for oily skin contain salicylic acid!!!! It is a super drying agent and will definitely eliminate your acne....and it will leave the rest of your face pretty dehydrated, not to mention bleach your favourite towels!  Lavender oil on the other hand naturalizes your sebum production and help calm over-production.  It's also antibacterial and anti fungal, helping you ward off break outs or infections! So whether you have an oily T zone, all over grease, or just a bit of shine it's perfect for you!  It's a multi-tasker of an essential oil!!!!!

*NOTE* I found my mask a little too runny!  So I added 2 teaspoons of baking soda.  Baking soda is a great gentle exfoliant and odor controller.  If you have sensitive skin, you could add talc or clay to thicken up your mask.  Ideally clay would be best.  Clay is natural deep pore cleanser, so adding it to this mask makes it a deep penetrating cleaner and moisturizing mask!
Step 5). Apply mask all over skin.
Make sure that you apply it thick enough that you can't really see your skin through the goop! Admire your monster-ness and have fiance take photos of your green green skin!

Step 6).  Leave on for 10-15 minutes MAX!
Do not let a face mask dry on your skin.  The moisture is good...once the edges start to dry, it's time to wash it off.

While you're waiting, package up your remaining mask in a seal-able container and store in the fridge for 14 days.  Even though there are no preservatives, the lemon, lavender and refrigeration will help your mask keep for next time!

Step 6). Wash off with warm water and pat dry.  Try not too be too bird-like and splash water everywhere....

Step 7).  Follow up with you favourite toner and moisturizer and admire your soft,
 moisturized, bright glowing skin.
Add jazz hands if needed...what am I saying?
Jazz hands are always needed!

Make sure to hop on over to Jill's Blog
and see her review on a store bought face mask!

Don't forget to stop by tomorrow...
I'll be reviewing my favourite lip balm!
We all have one-I'm excited to see what your fave is!

Sisterly Spa Series: Day 1 Bath Bombs

WELCOME TO THE SISTERLY SPA SERIES!

I'm Leslie, sister to the lovely Jill from Envirocraftiness.  We're here this week sharing some home made spa recipes, reviews of store bought products and a little skin care help for all the lucious ladies out there in Blog-land!  Every day we'll be posting a review for a store bought spa product on one blog, and the other sister will be posting a DIY version on her blog!  Make sure to check out both blogs each day!

Today: BATH BOMBS!
What's a bath bomb?  Well it's kinda like that exploding volcano science project we all did as kids (or still do with our kids) where you mix vinegar and baking soda and things go boom!  Only with a bath bomb, the boom doesn't happen until it hits the water (and it's not vinegar it's powdered citric acid that creates the chemical reaction in these bath beauties).

It might not look like much,  but Butter Ball is a little bomb with big time skin  softening powers!  Why?  Well 2 reasons.  If you've ever used a bath bomb (any brand) you'll feel soft when you get out, and that's becuase of the sodium bicarbonate aka baking soda. Baking soda will leave your skin feel soft, and odor free!  But this bomb has tiny bits of solid cocoa butter in the bomb that melt in your steamy bath!!!! Heaven.  Cocoa butter is a natural skin moisturizer and softener, helping relieve dry, cracked and itchy winter skin-bonus!  Not to mention this bomb smells good enough to eat! If you like vanilla-esque scents you'll really like the scent of this bomb.
It blends synthetic musk and ylang ylang, plus the
cocoa butter which creates a really warm, comforting smell.

On a personal note this is THE bathbomb I use when I can't make up my mind, and it's never a bad decision.  It's the vanilla ice cream of bath bombs-simple, pure, delicious!  These lovelies are great for sharing with that special someone...maybe on Valentine's Day?

Make sure to hop on over to Jill's Blog
and see how to make your very own bath bomb! She's got tips and tricks to get the perfect scent and how to mold the bombs into lovely shapes!

Don't forget to stop by tomorrow...I'm gonna be showing off a great DIY face mask for ALL SKIN TYPES and I'll tell you why it'll work for you!

Sisterly Spa Series: ABC's in Skin Care

OK, so this post is a bit of an extra.
It's just that I care so much about skin care, that I want to share this info with the world!  Plus this information will be handy to refer back to during the week when we get into the nitty gritty of our Sisterly Spa Series!

Have you ever wondered why commercials are telling you to buy moisturizers, masks, toners, eye cream etc with Vitamin A, C, E, or other way more scientific words (protein complex) but not to sure why they're supposed to be important?  Well, here's the (quick) lowdown on why natural skincare is where it's at and why those vitamins are imporatant for your skin and it's better to get them straight from the source (fruits and veggies).

FREE RADICALS
What are free radicals?  Free radicals are (without getting to sciency) outer forces like pollution, UV rays, and carbon monoxide that react with our bodies' molecules.  Unfortunately, free radicals tend not to be very choosy and will attack a variety of molecules including DNA, lipids and proteins in our skin. This can damage the structure of cell membranes, making cells function poorly or even die. This can cause premature aging, wrinkles, age spots and loss of elasticity (turkey neck)!

ANITOXIDANTS-TO THE RESCUE!
Antioxidants fight free radicals by stopping the reaction before the cell is irreversibly damaged. In the skin, this means that free radicals have a decreased ability to break down the collagen that keeps our skin elastic-preventing wrinkles. Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and beta-carotene (Vitamin A) are all great antioxidants.  Others include green tea, grape-seed oil.  Studies have shown that eating foods rich in antioxidants as well as applying them topically will help your overall health and help protect your body from free radicals.

VITAMIN A-beat carotene
Vitamin A additionally benefits skin in helping with acne, , stretch marks, and eczema.  Sources of Vitamin A include carrots and carrot juice, cantaloupes, apricots, eggs.

VITAMIN C
Vitamin C works to rejuvenate the skin in such a way that its earlier glow and health are maintained. It does this by moisturizing, encouraging growth of collagen and exfoliating and cleaning.  Sources of Vitamin C include rose hip extract, strawberries, lemons and of course oranges.  Potatoes are also a source of Vitamin C in large quantities....this may be why I found dark eye circle remedies made with potatoe!?!?

VITAMIN E
There's a lot floating around about Vitamin E and it seems to be the "hot" skin care thing.  I think this is mainly becuase of it's HUGE antioxidant power, thus keeping us looking younger longer.  Additionally it reduces transepidermal (through the skin) water loss from skin and strengthens the skin’s barrier function.  Meaning it acts as a humectant, keeping moisture in the skin!  So if you're using a a moisturizer that doesn't have Vitamin E, it might not be working as well as you'd have hoped!  sources of Vitamin E include almonds, blueberries, papaya and wheat germ!

So that's free radicals and anti oxidants!  Be prepared to learn a lot more this week, especially about essential oils and how they can benefit your skin and hair!
