Owl Rock Magnets

I am kicking butt at making projects I find on Pinterest.  I have made 3 things from my "Things to Make" Board!  Woo Hoo.  And these are really cute!
I just had to make these since we all know I have a bit of a thing for owls ...(I promise to take a picture of all the owlies/birds who now reside in our house soon)

These were SUPER easy to make.  Take in this gorgeous weather and go for a walk with your kids and let them pick rocks for you.  The flatter the better.  Then paint them all sorts of colours! Depending on the colour of paint you choose and the colour of the rock, you may need more than 1 coat.

Then get creative a paint some owly features on them.  Make sure you have a small paintbrush handy for those details.

I used sharpies to draw some features like beaks and the checkered bellies. WAY easier! Once all the details were done I used my handy glue gun to attach a button magnet to the back. Ta da!

And since I was giving these as a gift, I wanted a cute way to present them...think Leslie think.
I took the lid of an aluminum can, because it's metal and I knew the magnets would stick to it, but I wasn't sure how to keep the sharp edges from slicing the intended receiver.  Problem solved!

Glittery fabric.  I covered the one side (the inside that wasn't silver) with a piece of scrapbooking paper I hot glued down.  Then I hot glued the fabric to the front edge, making sure it looked nice.  Once the front was glued then I glued the fabric onto the scrapbook paper side! Voila!

This is a 2 part gift-stay tuned to see what I did with the can!  Another pinterest inspired project!

Silhouette Dreams

Ok so I don't actually have a Silhouette cutter-yet!  I am planning on getting one....or putting it on my registry...oh my gosh what a brilliant idea!  Anywho-my sister Jill bought one with her tax return refund, lucky duck.  So of course, my list of "Jilly please make this and send it to me" is growing daily.

And here's my first request.
A giant letter "K" in vinyl.

First things first....remember this hunk of junk?
I salvaged it from my old office = free!
I just had to figure out something cute to do with it.....
Beautiful huh?
It was part of What the Heck Wednesday a looooong time ago!
And we got some great ideas.
So I finally put one of those good ideas to work!  Only after I spray painted my tray did I go look at the graphic that was suggested!  So cute.  I always forget about the Graphics Fairy....I think I might spend the rest of my day on her site!

So here is the tray after
I know it's only spraypaint but I love it SO much more already!

On Jill's advice I downloaded the Silhouette software onto my computer so I could make the design I wanted and then send it to her to cut out!

Here are my two favourite fonts

Which one do you like better?

I think I might have already made up my mind, but maybe someone can persuade me otherwise!  I will likely have to waterproof modge podge or spray a laquer over the final product to make sure the vinyl doesn't come off.  Any tips and tricks you've got about the subject are always greatly appreciated.

Check back soon to find out which font a picked and how it looks all finished.

Owl Makeover

So I'm on a bit of an owl kick.  Actually I think a lot of people are!  In an abstract form owls can be pretty cool.  They definitely give space a retro vibe when painted in all one colour, like these from Urban Outfitters

I had mentioned earlier that I had found 3 gems at the thrift store.  Here is my third gem in all it's glory

Isn't he adorably ugly?  And yes he's broken-can you tell I busted his eye by accident?  Oh well, we all have our scars!  I hummed and hawed about what colour to paint him to give him a new life and gender!  For a couple days I was set on the Krylon "Strawberry" colour I saw when I picked up paint for my cameo garbage can....but I didn't think that would look so hot in my beige/teal/chocolate living room-which is where he will eventually live!  I finally settled on Hyacinth, which is truly a gorgeous colour and I will be using it ALOT!

First Coat=creepy

I can still see his undercoat!
If you look really closely you can see the whites of his eyes!

So a few coats later, after moving my project from outside to my garage-gotta love Vancouver in the fall (RAIN!) I ended up with this!  He/She is a bit sticky, since it is quite humid today and the garage is closed.

She's more purple than she looks.  The garage does not have the best lighting!

And here she is living on my side table with my orchid, lamp and plumeria candle.  I think she will live here until I get a bookcase I've been thinking about for a while!

I'm not in love with the hat....
I'm not too sure what I was do about it-I'm open to suggestions!

Three out of Four

What a looooong weekend! You know those projects you think you can crank out in 2 days tops and then it ends up taking longer? Oh yeah that was my weekend :) this was the weekend I decided to rid myself of the third blue room in our house. Yes my house has 4 blue rooms, all different shades. I already painted over my teal living room and sky blue kitchen. Last weekend my lightest of light baby blue bedroom was on the chopping block!

Here's what I started with....

Who in their right mind would want to live in this blue? Probably a lot of people but not me. Time to go! So last Thursday night I did some initial mudding of holes, nail pops, etc. I had planned to get so much done on Friday, except I ended up working a full day and by the time I got home I was pooped. So Saturday, after a late start thanks to my lazy fiancé, we got to priming....The edging was horrendous! As you can see we have 2 door frames, 2 double closets, and 3 windows and sills which require finicky brush work!

Look at my man working....I definitely needed his help.
I'm usually the go-getter, handy-man in my house, but this was for sure a two man job!

So tired.....so unimpressed, but we're finally done priming!

So Saturday we finished priming, and didn't have enough time to get the first coat of actual paint on.  How depressing?
But Sunday, boy howdy, did we get painting!!
So we started working on the trim .....

It was very exciting to see my vision come to life!  The colour was/is perfect...but I kid you not-the trim took us 5 HOURS!!! yes you heard right, 5 hours.  A friend asked me "What were you using, toothbrushes?"  It felt like it!  But it felt sooooo good to roll that paint on-it's always accompanied with a small panic attack because I don't trust my own instincts....

Ty kept likening the colour to chocolate milk (which is what it totally looks like) I asked him "Is that a good thing?"
He was like "Yup 'cuz after I'm done painting I get to eat the walls". Har har har!

First coat done! Success!

Luckily Sunday we got our butts in gear a little quicker and had time to let the paint dry for 4 hours and then gear up for the second coat.  Which was the easiest part of the whole ordeal, except our rollers kept leaving fuzz everywhere, so that was a little frustrating.

Ready to see my bedroom, all done, and (gasp) with the bed made and no clothes on the floor?!?!? Get ready!

No curtains or any other accoutrement.... I have some photos to hang above the bed as well as the Wall Talk Ty got for me a few Christmas's ago.  Can't wait to put it up!!
 "Always Kiss me Goodnight"

Yes that is Keeping Up With the Kardashians,
Ty's favourite show :P

Dreaming big....measuring how big is too big for a flat screen TV
We decided a 32" is plenty big enough!

And if you noticed, we put our room back together at 10pm on Sunday night.  Which thankfully left us Monday of the long weekend to be total and utter coach potatoes.  We really love the change and hope you do too!  I hope it inspires you to pull up your socks and revamp your living space!

Gotta Party!
